The "Big Cheese" held at
Caerphilly Castle each year is so called because of the production of
the famous Caerphilly Cheese and the annual race where contestants carry
a cheese around the castle grounds. This year`s event
attracted over 100,000 visitors who enjoyed all manner of medieval
enactments, displays and a splendid funfair.
Initially, my invitation to be " Artist in Residence"
was received with trepidation but I was soon at ease setting up a
substantial gallery and display area as well as facilities for children
to paint. I was also called upon to judge the entries in the local
school`s art competition. I`ve included the winning entries in the
photogallery.
Little was I to know that nearly 500 youngsters would
join Mary ( my wife) and me over two days to paint pictures based on my
well publicised painting " The first Big Cheese".
The international flavour of the Fayre was illustrated by my chats
with people from Australia, New Zealand, Florida and Germany as well as
all over the UK.
